Maryland Eastern Shore Bike Riding – Fixie 73

73 miles on a fixed gear bike.

Lucky warm weather day on the east coast today so I got up at 5am, got a few hours of work in and after lunch logged some miles outside on my fixed gear. A bit of head wind and 73 miles later I was pretty beat. I made it to the edge of the Chesapeake Bay on Tilghman Island at Black Walnut Point. Temps got up to 65, tonight they are calling for 1 inch of snow, go figure.

Fixed Gear 100 Mile Bike Ride around Maryland Eastern Shore

When I first got my fixed gear bike I thought that doing 20 miles much less 100 was going to be hard. I follow some fixed gear crazy riders on the west coast and started seeing them doing 70+mile rides and said to myself, “Clearly it can be done.” So today I started riding with a friend and when he needed to go home after about 75 miles I decided it was too nice out to go home so I kept on riding. Finished the day with 107 miles and a big steak. Fixie riding rocks.

Wahoo KICKR Trainer Finally Coming Out

I’m sitting in my kitchen at our house on the Eastern Shore of Maryland looking outside at snow on the ground, wind howling through the trees, wishing I was at our place in California, but being thankful that I have a trainer to ride in the warmth and comfort inside the house. But let’s face it, riding inside on a trainer is like watching glue dry, but I suck it up like everyone else as as part of training.

A gear-head bike friend, Jorge, told me about the new trainer that Wahoo was designing called the KICKR Power Trainer. I’ve been watching their site for it’s release and it looks like it is finally coming out. So why am I excited about of all things a trainer? Well, I like the idea of not having to use your own wheel and also the fact that you can ride courses and record your rides right from your iPhone vs. the old CompuTrainer way of having to have a windows computer hooked up and spending who knows how many hours configuring the thing.

The KICKR looks like it is going to be pretty cool. If I have to ride inside, I say I mind as well have some fun. Once I get it I will post some feedback on if it is as good as it sounds.

New Pake Fixed Gear Bike

I have been reading a lot about off season training and it appears a lot of professional/serious riders do some fixie riding. I figured I did it as a kid, so why not check it out again. I called Gary from Bodacious Bikes up about two weeks ago and asked him what he thought. He said he thought it was a good idea, it would help my peddle stroke, build some muscle and provide a change of pace. That all jived with that I had been reading so I headed over to Gary’s and gave him a general direction of what I wanted. I wanted a nice one, but not so nice that if I scratched it that it would matter terribly, but good enough that if I ever did want to take it to the track I could. Gary put some cool specs together and here is how it turned out. Pretty sweet! I put a few miles on it today to see how it felt, feels like it wants to have some fun!

Having your bike stolen sucks. I never leave my road bike where I am not with in a few feet of it. I would not even leave it locked up because it would get stolen. When I take it somewhere it lives inside my truck unless I am on it or can see it. So why do people steal bikes? Where do stolen bikes go? Here is a great article that explains it, worth the read to get in the mind of the jerks that find it fun to steal bikes.

Mid year 2012 B365x Update

I had my annual physical and the test results are in:
weight 148.8lbs
total cholesterol 136
triglycerides 42
HDL 63
LDL 65
PSA fine

I am averaging 6 rides a week on the bike averaging about 200 miles. My miles average is down from last year but I am on a new training program since I started racing and am faster then last year and lower body fat.

Time for a new Schwalbe ZX

Had this happen a few miles from home. I love the Schwalbe’s, but they definitely do not last super long. I deal with it for the ride, but if you ride these it’s the one drawback.

UPDATE: I took this tire to Gary at Bodacious Bikes in Easton, MD where I purchased the tires and he called Schwalbe and apparently they are seeing this issue in 2-4 of this model tire out of a 1000. They are good about things and are covering it under warranty. If it happens to you before you say some four letter words and jam it in the trash, save it and take it back to your bike shop, they should cover it.
